Thanks to the heroics of forward Daniel Wessner, Sweden completed its collection of IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship medals after winning the bronze medal against Germany in a 3-2, overtime decision in Bad Tölz.
Wessner tied the game at two in the last minute of regulation and then netted the game-winner 3:24 into overtime. It was the lowest scoring game of the championship as the teams combined for five total goals.
It took nearly 20 minutes for either team to register a goal. Sweden broke the scoring silence midway through the second quarter only to have the 1-0 erased less than a minute later when German defenseman Lukas Slavetinsky knotted the game at one.
The second half started as quietly as the first as its took 10:13 for either team to take the lead. German Michael Wolf ended the stalemate, making it a 2-1 game. It looked like Germans would hold on for the 2-1 win, until Wessner got hos first goal with 44 seconds left in the game.
Sweden started the 12-minute overtime on the power-play but took until the 3:24 mark for Wessner to flip the game-winner in on a rebound that went in moments before the net was dislodged.
Sweden won the gold medal in 2002 and got the silver last year. Meanwhile Germany hasn’t won a medal at the championship since getting bronze in 2002.
