Someone must have told Team USA that it only takes one goal to win a game. The team earned its second one-goal victory in as many games today against Sweden.
Team USA’s three goals was enough for the squad to squeak past Sweden during the preliminary round of the 2003 IIHF In-Line Hockey World Championship. Team USA edged Sweden, 3-2, in the win.
The United States held a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first period after scoring two power-play goals. Geno Parrish and Jason Deskins scored the two first-period goals for the U.S. Sweden pulled to within one goal with two minutes left in the second period after Niclas Norlander scored.
Deskins registered his second goal of the game nearly five minutes into the third period, giving the U.S. a 3-1 lead. Sweden chipped away at the lead with a power-play goal 42 seconds into the fourth period, but the U.S. defense buckled down for the remainder of the period, holding Sweden scoreless and holding on for its second one-goal win of the championship.
Team USA is now undefeated and play Austria, which has lost both of its games tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Sweden (1-1) will play the Czech Republic (1-1) at 8 p.m.
