Hungary Tops South Africa, 6-3

Hungary earned a win in its first game of the 2003 IIHF In-Line Hockey World Championship with a 6-3 victory over South Africa, which was playing its first-ever game at the World Championship.

Hungary earned a win in its first game of the 2003 IIHF In-Line Hockey World Championship with a 6-3 victory over South Africa, which was playing its first-ever game at the World Championship.

South Africa was the first to score in the game when Cory Turner notched a goal at the 3:57 mark of the first period. Hungary scored two consecutive goals, one from Tomas Dobos and the other from Gergely Borbas, to claim the 2-1 lead.  The teams exchanged goals in the second period when Dobas scored for his second goal for Hungary and Jaques Booyser scored his first of two goals for South Africa.

South Africa was a threat for much of the second half, but the size and offense of the Hungarian team proved to be too much for the newcomers, as Hungary pulled away, adding two additional goals for the 6-3 win.

"I really thought that we had a chance to get a win," South Africa Head Coach David May said. "Our guys really did a good job of keeping a good attitude throughout the game."

Hungary (1-0) will face Brazil (1-0) at 17:30 tomorrow, and South Africa (0-1) plays Great Britain (0-1) in the first game of the day at 15:00.
